Letaba welcomes a new mayor into fold
Peter Matlou has been elected the new Mayor of the Greater Letaba Municipality in Limpopo to replace Godfrey City Modjadji.
LIMPOPO – Matlou was nominated by his predecessor during an inauguration ceremony for the new council of the Greater Letaba Municipality held at the council chambers in Modjadjiskloof near Tzaneen recently.
This followed two weeks after the municipal elections which took place on 3 August. After councillors were sworn in by Magistrate Helen Mbhalati, they nominated the new Speaker, Mokgadi Dorah Makhananisa, who will serve as the chairperson of the council for a period of five years.
She immediately presided over the election of the new mayor and the other 10 members of the executive committee from which Matlou was nominated.
In addition they elected seven councillors from political parties to represent their parties in the Mopani District Municipality.
The nominations of the executive committee were done based on the percentage of votes the political parties obtained during elections.
The ANC got eight seats after it obtained 77,67%, EFF got two seats as they received 15% of the votes. Cope and the DA did not receive any seats as they both received 3,33%, the Limpopo Residents Association (LIRA) also received no seats as they only managed to get 1,67% of the votes.
The nine members of the executive committee, excluding Matlou, are Mogale Masela, Melidah Nkwana, Reuben Mosila, Jane Rababalela, Godfrey City Modjadji, Sbongile Rasetsoke, Dessia Modiba, Defier Raphokwana, and Grace Selowa.
Phetole Mampeule was reelected as the ANC Chief Whip in the council, a position he has occupied for three years before the recent elections.
Meanwhile, it is expected that the swearing in of the Mopani District Municipality will be done tomorrow (Thursday) during the first fourth council sitting that will be held at the Tzaneen Showgrounds.
