This, after a shooting took place outside the campus, Mamotintane village on Sunday morning where a 25-year-old student was shot in the thigh by a male suspect who allegedly wanted to rob him.
One of the students said they want the police to help protect them. He said, “students who stay off campus are not safe and that is why we requested protection from the police. It seems like our grievances fell on deaf ears. We will start taking the law into our own hands if the police don’t do their job,” he explained.
He further outlined that the university accommodates about 6 684 students, the majority of students are forced to look for rooms off campus, which is not safe because sometimes they finish writing exams very late, and then have to walk home.

Mankweng Police Spokesperson, Capt Mohlaka Mashiane said the student who was shot had to answer a call from nature around 03:00 on Sunday morning when he was approached by a male suspect. “It is alleged that it was a robbery and the victim did not comply with the demands made by the suspect, the suspect opened fire and shot the student in the thigh. The student was taken to hospital for medical attention,” explained Mashiane.
He further said a case of attempted murder was opened and no arrests have been made yet. Mashiane pleaded with the community to help the police arrest the suspect.

“The situation at the university is calm and we are monitoring the area. Students also went back to their classes and we want to assure them that we will look at their memorandum and give them feedback in due course,” he said.
Mashiane added that they had a door-to-door campaign in Mamotintane last month and they also held campaigns at the university to discuss crime issues with the students. He further said the community and students should join forces with the police to ensure that the area becomes a crime free zone. Mashiane encouraged anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Mankweng Police Station Commander, Col Angie Maloma at 082 565 8524.
