Disruptions plague Blouberg council meeting

The DA members slightly interrupted the Blouberg Municipality re-elected council Speaker, Maria Thamaga's speech at the municipal inauguration held at Senwabarwana Capricorn FET College in Senwabarwana last Tuesday.

LIMPOPO – It all happened when DA member, Minky Tjumana, complained that, as the opposition parties, they were never given a chance to participate in the council meetings.

She said the ANC has always cheated the DA and that shows the poor characteristics of their party.

“Our own calculation shows that the ANC qualifies for six seats in the council while the EFF and the DA qualify for one seat each.

“As DA, we are going to fight for these seats in court like the previous time when the ANC cheated us and took our seat on council,” said Tjumana.

However, the speaker managed to bring the council to order, but later EFF members in their customary red overalls and gumboots left the council.

Speaking at the council, the newly elected Blouberg Municipality Mayor, Solomon Pheedi, said as the ruling party they humbly appeal to other parties to respect and represent their electorates.

“It is our intention to consolidate on the gates made as we have been the traditional step to the rural municipality that we are and also commit closely with our traditional authorities with emphasis on reelecting the councillors,” said Pheedi.

He explained that working together as councillors will help them to give better service delivery to their people.

“From the political front we pledge our support to resolve the problems in order to make our municipality better with regard to the delivery of basic services,” he said

“We are fully aware that development of infrastructure is the cornerstone to attract potential investors and economic development in our municipality,” he said.

Pheedi further said they will take advantage of economic opportunities, especially in the tourism, agriculture, and mining industry, as well as establishing viable business opportunities.

“We understand the socioeconomic service delivery backlogs that engulf our municipality coupled with all related frustrations.

“A total of 95% of the Blouberg Municipality have access to electricity and that really shows the previous council did their best and with that we should ensure we carry on where they left off,” he said.

Blouberg EFF municipal elected executive committee member, Alex Kobo, was not available for comment on why they left the council meeting.
