DA wins Mookgophong/Modimolle muni
Marlene van Staden from the DA was elected as the mayor of the newly-merged Mookgophong/Modimolle Municipality on Tuesday during the first council sitting after the Local Government Election on 3 August.
LIMPOPO – The DA received the majority of the votes and Van Staden took over the Mayor’s seat.
Johann Abrie was appointed as the Speaker and Daniel Motshwene took the reigns as Chief Whip. Both municipalities have been plagued with tender irregularities, bad service delivery, and poor fiscal management.
This resulted in numerous service delivery protests which saw residents demanding the removal of their respective ANC mayors.
The DA said in a statement: “The newly formed Mookgophong/Modimolle Municipality will be a beacon of good governance under the DA. We, however, know that we have inherited years of mismanagement. We know it is going to take time to fix what is broken but we pledge to work tirelessly to ensure this happens, each and every day”.
To do this, the DA plans to:
• Promote tourism to encourage economic growth and job creation in the area.
• Improve infrastructure (roads, buildings, town centre, municipal facilities) to boost the economy.
• Set up transparent and open tender processes.
• Create jobs and opportunities for the high number of unemployed people.
• Adopt a zero tolerance approach to corruption and to ensure all money is spent properly.
• To appoint a fit-for-purpose executive that ensures that people who govern and serve in municipalities are the best people to do so.
• To carry out a skills audit to ensure a professional and competent municipal civil service.
• Improve service delivery to the people of Modimolle and Mookgophong.
• The appointment of Section 26 and 27 managers that are fit-for-purpose.
“This DA-led coalition government in partnership with other parties will work together to bring the much needed change the residents of Mookgophong/Modimolle deserve.
“This will be an accessible, transparent and caring government that will strive to improve the lives of the people,” the statement further read.
