Crime wave: stabbing, robbery within days of each other

"I strongly believe the reason for the increase in crime of late is due to the disappointing fact that criminals in Mokopane know that crime pays. We need to work together to regain law and order in our town," says Andy Goetsch, Chairperson of the Community Policing Forum (CPF)

MOKOPANE – An employee of Truworths, a well-known clothing store franchise, in the Crossing Mall was stabbed to death by an alleged shoplifter recently.

“In spite of emergency medical support that was provided at the scene, the victim tragically succumbed to his wounds in the Voortrekker hospital,” stated Michael Mark, CEO of Truworths. “We are greatly saddened by this incident and have reached out to the deceased’s family to support them during this difficult time. The safety and security of our employees and customers remains our number one priority,” he continued.

Mokopane Police Spokesperson, Sgt Irene Masingi reported: “The man responsible for the stabbing was arrested and appeared before the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing a charge of murder. The case was postponed to 30 August for further investigation.”

Just three days after the stabbing incident, Keystone Milling in Sussex Street was the target of an armed robbery.

Werner van Zyl, Manager of Keystone Milling, told Bosveld: “Five men entered the workshop just after 08:00 on Monday alleging they were interested in buying maize meal. Once inside, they pulled out their firearms and two of the men entered the office and demanded we lie down on the floor.” Van Zyl further said: “They asked for the key to the safe and stole our cell phones and an undisclosed amount of money. Before fleeing the scene they told us if we called for help, we would die.”

According to van Zyl, the whole incident took place in less than five minutes. The suspects all wore blue trousers, black shirts and hats.

“I believe this incident was planned as the suspects had a price list, which they requested from us in June. They knew the list was their ticket to get passed our security. I am grateful that no shots were fired and no one was hurt,” said Van Zyl.

Sgt Masingi said the suspects are still at large and that investigations are ongoing.

Andy Goetsch, Chairperson of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) strongly appeals to the community to stand united against crime. “These perpetrators need to be stopped in their tracks. We can only put a stop to this if we all work together.”
