Shanon Tabane (19) is set to take part in the One Young World Summit 2016 which will take place in Ottawa, Canada from 28 September to 1 October.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane-born motivational speaker and emerging entrepreneur is the owner of ST Media and founder of a non-profit organisation (NGO), The Potential Youth.

His NGO offers mentor and skills development programmes and scouts talent in art and sports.

The Gr 12 learner at Capricorn High School says he hopes his contribution to empowering other youths in society will help curb unemployment by stimulating an interest in entrepreneurship and creating employment for themselves. He revealed to BONUS that this will be his second time attending the summit and he looks forward to exchanging ideas with other influential people.

“The experience is overwhelming, the summit is attended by prominent individuals from all over the world who have successful careers in various professions. It is inspiring to be in such an environment and also learning about the programmes they do to give back to society,” he explains.

The enthusiastic Shanon says he wants to share his knowledge with the locals to help build a generation that is eager to contribute to the country’s development.

One Young World is a charity that stages an annual summit, which brings together the brightest young people from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.

The 2015 summit in Bangkok welcomed 1 300 delegates aged between 16 and 30 from 196 countries.

The cost of this trip is estimated at R72 000.

“I am seeking sponsors who are willing to assist me. So far I have managed to raise R20 000 through donations from those in the public who believe in me.”

He says finding sponsors is not easy and he hopes local government will contribute towards such initiatives. Shanon encourages other youths to be the change they want to see and to chase after their dreams regardless of the negativity around them.
