Temporary educators in Limpopo who have not been paid since April will get their salaries later this month. The decision was taken last Thursday at a meeting between the South African Democratic Teacher’s Union (Sadtu), the Department of Education and the Provincial Treasury.
Outstanding payments for around 269 educators would be processed on 14 September, Sowell Tjebane, Sadtu Deputy Provincial Secretary said on Monday. All other outstanding payments due to educators, including the housing allowance, would be paid before the end of September. Tjebane said the talks were being facilitated by the Premier’s Office.
The union said it expected the two departments to set up a task team to handle possible obstacles in an attempt to expedite the process.
Treasury further gave the department permission to extend the contracts of 1 705 temporary teaching posts. Sadtu said it expected the two departments to set up a task team to handle possible obstacles in an attempt to expedite the process.
Last month, the union threatened to stage a protest if the educators were not paid. Sadtu said the teachers were not paid in an attempt to “control budgets” while Department of Education Spokesperson, Naledzani Rasila earlier this month said the non-payment was the result of a systems problem.
