‘Always remember the past to build a stronger future’

Retired Professor Thomas K Ranuga, in partnership with the University of Limpopo (UL) recently launched his book, Surviving Apartheid.

LIMPOPO – Ranuga was born in 1938 and enrolled for a pharmacy degree in Turfloop in 1972.

He gave up on his studies due to his participation in student protests against the Apartheid government.

He moved to England in 1972 where he obtained a degree in sociology from the Polytechnic of North London and a PhD in sociology from Brandes University (USA) in 1982, specialising in Third World Development and Comparative Ethnic Relations.

He has since returned to South Africa to pursue his writing career.

Ranuga is not new to the world of literature, he has written two other books, The New South Africa and the Socialist Vision and South Africa under Majority Rule.

He says the book details how he and his peers survived the tyrannical Apartheid government. He hopes the youth will read his book and be inspired.

He says it is important for them to remember the past in order to build a strong future for the country.

“It is important for them to know how far we’ve come and for them to continue the struggle,” Ranuga said.

“I took my time to complete this book, I wanted it to be authentic and to resonate with younger generations,” he continued.

Ranuga says the book shows how far the country has come in building a democratic nation and developing a love of reading.
