Late choral music composer honoured

Minister of Communications, Faith Muthambi has called on the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to revive choral music competitions to carry on the legacy left by the late Dr SJ Khosa, one of South Africa's most renowned choral music composers.

LIMPOPO – Muthambi spoke at a ceremony at Khoza’s burial site in Merwe Village outside Malamulele on Saturday.

“The community of Merwe should form a choral choir in memory of Khoza,” she said. “I remember participating in choral music competitions when I was in secondary school and it was a wonderful experience. We were led by a music genius, Professor Alfred Nevhutanda. Today I’m happy to know he established Prof Alfred Nevhutanda Development Foundation. They host workshops to promote the genre and I hope it will encourage more people to participate and appreciate choral music.”

Representing the Khosa family, Buti Manasseh Khosa said it is unbelievable to see people from KZN and Gauteng ascending to Limpopo to honour his brother. “We appreciate the foundation for tirelessly documenting everything my brother attained. My brother was a down-to-earth person and never undermined the people. We are humbled by the minister’s visit and to hear how many people have been touched by his music,” said Khosa.

Khosa’s daughter, Xingwavila said she cried tears of joy when people from all corners of South Africa honoured her father’s memory by attending the service.

“Words are not enough to express the gratitude we have for everyone here today. We really didn’t expect such a big turnout and I thank the foundation for spearheading the proceedings.

“My father was peaceful and very brave. He dedicated us to God. Even though he passed away three years ago, we miss him every day,” she concluded.
