Provincial hospital’s surgery unit temporarily closed
As a result of new equipment being installed at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital, the surgery unit is closed and will only open in December.
POLOKWANE – BONUS received several complaints from residents who say they were referred to other hospitals when they wanted to go to the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital for surgeries.
According to Department of Health Spokesperson, Derick Kganyago, as a result of new equipment being installed at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital, the surgery unit is closed and will not open for a few weeks.
He adds that cases are being referred to hospitals around Polokwane to ensure the maintenance can continue uninterrupted to expedite the process and ensure the hospital is fully prepared to handle the influx of patients during the festive season.
“The hospital is expected to open again on 5 December for surgeries. After endlessly needing to repair the existing equipment, the department decided that it would be better for all if the faulty equipment was replaced to ensure that the hospital can deliver the best level of service possible to Limpopo residents,” Kganyago explains.
“Mankweng, Seshego and Lebowakgomo hospitals will be utilised to deal with the needed operations. The maternity theatre and a theatre used for emergencies remains operational at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital for the time being. We as the department are ready and able to treat the possible influx of incidents during the holidays. We will be taking part in a festive project launch early next month and we would like to have the hospital up and running at 100% before then,” Kganyago said.
He added the original plan was to have the installation of the equipment done by Thursday, 1 December, however the service providers said they will not be able to finish the work by then.
