Gone in an instant

"We were walking to work when we heard the sound of slamming brakes and we saw a taxi skipping a red traffic light. I turned to say something to my wife and she was gone."

POLOKWANE – These are the haunting words of Cassim Shaibu (33) as he spoke to BONUS at the scene of an accident where a minibus taxi skipped a red traffic light and collided with a Cash in Transit (CIT) vehicle. The CIT vehicle was hit on the side and ended on the pavement.

The taxi that skipped the traffic light.

Shaibu, still in a state of shock, told BONUS he and his soon to be wife, Selina Majopelo (35), were on their way to work at a residential building in Schoeman Street when they saw the taxi disobey the red traffic light.

“We had just been dropped off a block away and was on our way down the street when we saw the taxi travelling in Schoeman Street towards Rissik Street. I was telling her that the taxi was going to hit the CIT vehicle. When I turned to her the vehicle came past me and slammed her against the building. I never even got the chance to pull her out of the way,” he said.

Shaibu said Majopelo was killed instantly.

The area was cordoned off by emergency services and police.

“I will miss being with her all the time and spending my trips to and from home with her, talking about our future and how fast our baby boy is growing,” Shaibu said.

He said Majopelo was his pillar of strength and his partner and now he would have to be both mother and father for their 11-month-old boy.

Majopelo leaves behind her fiance, son,  sister, mother and father.

The funeral is planned for Saturday, 11 March outside the city.

The CIT company said they are not ready to comment on the matter as police investigations are still ongoing.

Polokwane Police Spokesperson, WO Lesiba Ramoshaba, said a case of culpable homicide is being investigated, adding that no arrests have been made.
