Art is his true passion

He studied in Bloemfontein at the Mitchell Taylor Art Academy and is currently sign writing for various companies like Midas, Autozone, Build-it and many more.

A born and bred local artist true to his passion and beautiful talent of art, describes painting and drawing as something he cannot go to sleep without.

Madonna Mmatli (25) started drawing when he was only five years old.

When visiting his house in Sekghaghapeng, I could feel just by looking at the bright colours and artsy structures, that it is the home of an artist.

Madonna tells that he does not spend most of his time at home because of the reason that he travel to Polokwane and as far as Modimolle for his work.

Madonna grew from drawing pictures on a wall with fire coal to one of the most talented artists in the community. “Art is almost like my best friend. Since I was little art tickled my heart strings. It was difficult to keep on painting and drawing, because my father was not crazy about the idea of me wanting to paint for a life, but after all it paid off. My mother was the one who always encouraged me. She liked my paintings. Unfortunately both of my parents have passed away and now they cannot see my success”, Madonna explained.

This free spirited young man told Bosveld that he used to be permanently employed, but that he soon realised working class was not for him if he couldn’t get dressed in jeans. He said that he would rather end up full of paint than in a suit.

According to Madonna the best painting that he ever mastered was one of Nelson Mandela looking at himself in the mirror. Madonna has no specific style that attracts him and said that he paints whatever he feels and gets a lot of inspiration in books, television, real life and dreams.

Madonna is extremely fond of children and is currently busy with a project where he exhibits his paintings at various schools and teach children the basics of drawing and painting.

“I hope to inspire a lot of people one day, especially children, because that is where I started. I had no one to help me and guide me so I had to build myself up from scratch”, said Madonna.
