GAAL board encouraged to soar to new heights

The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Nandi Ndalane officially inaugurated the newly appointed board recently.

POLOKWANE – Ndalane has called on the new board of Gateway Airports Authority Limited (GAAL) to turn Polokwane International Airport around and strive for a clean audit report.

She officially inaugurated the newly appointed board, appointed for a period of three years, in Polokwane on 1 June.

Tom Nkwana was appointed chairperson, while Princess Tsakani Nkambule was appointed the deputy chairperson.

The board has already started with their duties. During the inauguration, Ndalane implored the new board to change the image of GAAL and ensure that it obtains a positive image and gains public confidence. She called on them to be honest, open and to work hard with their first task to appoint the new chief executive officer for GAAL.

Ndalane expressed confidence in the team and assured them her support throughout their journey. The other board members are Justice Luthuli, Sapheu Maphuta, Chief Livhuwani Matsila, Billy Teffo, Khensani Mashiane, Rufus Kharidza and Thembisile Mathabatha.

The board members’ mandate is to turn the airport around to be more effective and sustainable and to get more passengers to use the airport, also with the transport of goods. They must bring economically active entities to the airport, Provincial Government Spokesperson Phuti Seloba said a month ago, when he announced the names of the new board members at a press conference.

An interim board was appointed in January and an advertisement for a new CEO was also placed, with a deadline of 31 March. “This position is the highest ranking Executive Manager at GAAL, and is in charge of the day-to-day operations and management of an organisation.

The CEO must be able to give clear direction and guidance to the management team. GAAL needs a robust leader with proven management experience,” the advertisement stated.

The requirements for the incumbent includes inter alia an appropriate SAQA recognised honour’s degree in management or relevant equivalent qualification, a, minimum of 10 years’ demonstrable senior management experience of which five years must have been at executive management, aviation experience will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be required to sign a five-year performance agreement and to undergo security clearance. The CEO will report to the Board of Directors.
