The commemoration of Youth Day came early for learners of Motholo Lower Primary School in the Mankweng area when receiving a donation of school shoes from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Ward 31 last Thursday.
A classroom at the school served as venue for a short handing over ceremony of 23 pairs of shoes purchased by EFF PR Councillor on Polokwane Municipal Council, Thabitha Modiba for needy and orphaned boys and girls. The learners received their shoes from EFF PR Councillo on Polokwane Municipal Council, Jerry Hine. He was joined by fellow-councillors Mabu Mohlasedi, Mabatsidi Mothapo and Betty Molope.
Apart from their distinct EFF regalia, members of the party otherwise donned school uniforms ahead of the June 16 national remembrance the next day. Prior to the occasion EFF Ward 31 Chairperson Agnesius Thosago beforehand informed Polokwane Observer that both him and Modiba had completed their primary schooling at the institution, located in Motholo Village situated close to the University of Limpopo, and that the donation was a gesture of gratitude towards the school.
It was learnt that the learners who received shoes represented an estimated eighth of the impoverished learner population of almost 200 children attending the school still in need of uniforms, especially in winter. According to information some of the kids formed part of child-headed families while some were taken care of by relatives.
In the meantime life went on as energetic children’s voices sounded out elsewhere on the school yard.
