Sepedi poet needs help
A local poet is looking for assistance to publish a book with the Sepedi poems he has written.
MOKOPANE – Evans Mashegoane said his love for poems started in secondary school. He began writing Sepedi poems in 2015 and since then he has written 40 poems which he now wants to compile in a book.
His favourite poem is called ‘kitikiti’ which is about young people giving in to peer pressure without any help from the elderly and young girls leaving their homes to become sexworkers. Here is an extraction: “Boka moso bja bona bo makgarede nna kea ratwa, Botlositse ke gona go ratwa ke bannaba potla ys, Go nona mathari nna ke thoba kgobe ka mootiwa, Ba hianotse direthe basa bone pele gore bophelo boa fetega boka molafatladi wa mebala bala.”
For him to publish the book an estimated R15 000 is needed and he asks the community for donations to help make his dream a reality.
He thanks his poem editor, Shirley Ngwato for her help. Evans also gives volunteer Sepedi classes for those struggling with the language. You can give him a call at 063 015 9297 or 076 531 6271.
