Extramural activities give kids that little ‘extra’

Many people tend to overlook the importance of extramural activities when they encourage their children to do well at school.

POLOKWANE – “Extramural activities, however, are as important as the academic time table as they allow the learners to broaden their level of concentration by shifting their focus onto something else apart from academics. I, for one was very active throughout my high school and tertiary years where I played netball and also participated in school debates which really helped me to learn about other aspects of life which affect the community,” Lerato Mokgehle, a mathematics teacher at Motse Maria Secondary School, told Review.

The 28-year-old obtained her B.Ed qualification at the University of the Witwatersrand and decided to pass on her knowledge to the learners at her home in Limpopo.

She said she encourages learners to participate in extramural activities and to not solely focus on academics. These physical exercises and mental stimulation activities, she explained, challenge learners mentally as they have to come up with solutions to each problem they encounter on the sporting field or other activities they engage in.

“Extramural activities help learners to re-evaluate themselves to find out what other skills and talents they may have other than excelling in the classroom. It is important for every learner to engage and partake in extramural activities so they can discover and develop all their skills,” she concluded.
