Traditional holiday fun and games

POLOKWANE – Holiday time is meant to be fun and exciting for the entire family, however, doing the norms such as going out and watching movies can get boring and spoil the festive spirit, especially for the children.
Review found out what traditional games the entire family can take part to make the festive season a fun and bonding experience.
“I always try to encourage my family to get off the couch and to stretch and play outside. Together you can play games such as hopscotch, or more traditional games such as Kgathi, Bhati, Diketo and Mgusha to help you make the festive season memorable and bond as a family. I want to incorporate the games my family and I played during the festive season into my family’s celebrations,” Khomotso Disolwane from Westenburg said.

The 28-year-old businesswoman is a wife and mother of one and shared some advice about which games families can play together.
“My son loves playing ball, so we always go outside to play, sometimes even visiting the park. We usually play kick and pass which is really simple and great fun,” she explained.
Other games include:
- Bhathi which is played with one tennis ball and can be played in teams of two. One player will stand on the far right and the other left then one player in the middle who will try as hard as they can to duck the ball while building up a stack of cans until she finishes stacking all the cans laying on the floor. If the player gets hit by the tennis ball they are disqualified. Players will take turns to play each position in the game.
- Kgathi is played using a skipping rope. This game is similar to Bhathi, however, a skipping rope is used instead of a tennis ball. Two players will hold the ends of the skipping rope and one player will be in the middle and skip to the swinging of the rope until they get exhausted then give the other players a chance to also skip.
- Diketo can be played using 10 stones collected and presented by two players and one stone which is to be used to throw in the air while attempting to drag one stone from the circle drawn on the floor where all 20 stones collected are kept. The player with the most stones collected will be the winner.
- Mgusha is played using a long string made from an old pantyhose tied together in such a way that there is no way through when two people wear the pantyhose around their knees. One player will jump in and out of the pantyhose, the ones standing on different ends of the pantyhose will each time move the string of pantyhose up until the one jumping fails to jump in and out of the string. The players will then alternate positions so the next one can try their hand at jumping.
