2 arrested with illicit cigarettes worth R600 000 in Polokwane
Two men were arrested after police allegedly found illicit cigarettes worth about R600 000 in a truck on the N1 in Polokwane.
POLOKWANE – Two men aged 26 and 33 were arrested after police allegedly found illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R600 000 in a truck in Polokwane.
According to Limpopo police, members of the Limpopo Flying Squad carried out an intelligence-driven operation between the evening of May 21 and the morning of May 22.
Police said they received information about a white MAN refrigerated truck allegedly transporting illicit cigarettes along the N1 Polokwane bypass.
The truck was intercepted at the R101 Shell Ultra City filling station before being searched at a police station.
During the search, officers allegedly discovered 102 boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes inside the vehicle.
Police also seized the truck allegedly used in the commission of the offence.
The two suspects were arrested on charges relating to the possession of illicit cigarettes and are expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (May 25).
Limpopo provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe praised members involved in the operation for their vigilance and efforts in combating organised crime.
Investigations are continuing.
