Former Limpopo SAPS captain in dock for theft of state firearm

The 52-year-old suspect was a former Commander of the Local Criminal Record Centre in Lephalale

LIMPOPO – A former police captain, who was wanted for the theft of a state firearm and an official laptop, has been arrested at Madodonga village in Tshilwavhusiku policing predict under Makhado Cluster.

“The 52-year-old suspect was a former Commander of the Local Criminal Record Centre in Lephalale and after resigning from the service in May 2015, he never returned the said state properties. A case of theft was subsequently opened for investigation and he has been sought by the Lepahale Police since September 2015, until he was arrested at 18:00 on Saturday 6 January 2018, after a domestic related incident involving his girlfriend, said Police Spokesperson,  Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

He was charged with possession of a firearm without a license for this incident, confirmed Mojapelo.

The suspect appeared today (8 January 2018) in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court on a charge of theft of state firearm and was remanded in custody until Wednesday 10 January 2018. He will appear before the Tahilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (9 January 2018) on a charge of possession of a firearm without a license.

The state firearm has since been recovered and it will be sent for ballistic examination. Police investigations still continuing to locate the laptop, concluded Mojapelo.
