Despite a decision by Universities South Africa (Usaf) that public universities will not allow walk-in applications for 2018, University of Limpopo (UL) and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Polokwane Campus decided to give late applicants a lifeline.
On Tuesday Usaf Chief Executive Officer, Ahmed Bawa is quoted to have said that universities would abide by enrolment plans and targets which had been agreed upon by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and that applications to all 26 universities had already closed in 2017.
The call did not deter myriads of potential students who queued at various institutions in Polokwane from Monday hoping to secure a place for this academic year.
Kgalema Mohuba, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications at the University of Limpopo said they do accept walk-ins and late applications and first time students can apply at the University today (Thursday) until tomorrow (Friday).“We fully respect the call by USAF but every university is unique and has its own enrolment plan. We have been accepting walk-ins and benefiting from them in the past. We are a University that serves the poorest of the poor and students from different backgrounds. Some of them don’t understand the system. We can’t chase them away,” Mohuba said.
National Spokesperson for Unisa, Martin Ramotshela said they will not be taking any walk-ins and late applications. “The registration process was opened in September and people who were interested in studying with us applied during that period. Those who are interested in studying with us can target the second semester with registration from 2 to 26 April.”
Walter Tshamano, TUT Polokwane Campus Director said walk-in applications are accepted for some programmes. “There are a few places in Economic Finances, Management Sciences and Information and Communication Technology.”
Takalani Dzaga, Director of Communications and Marketing at Univen said they will not allow late applications and walk-ins, while Tumelo Morobe, Public Relations Officer at Capricorn College for TVET said registration for new students will only commence today (Thursday) at all provincial colleges.
