Two Police officers who allegedly demanded bribe money and a woman who reportedly claimed social grants for three non-existing grandchildren are facing charges of corruption after they were arrested by the Limpopo Hawks.
Hawks Spokesperson Matimba Maluleke said Patrick Mahlasela Baloyi and Ponty Andrew Matlou attached to the Pienaarsrivier Police Station were expected to apply for bail in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after they were arrested last Wednesday on charges of theft and corruption. The two officers allegedly discovered a large amount of cash in a vehicle they had stopped and searched on the N1 at Pienaarsrivier. They allegedly warned the driver that he could be charged with money laundering if he did not pay a R20 000 bribe. The driver only realised later that R210 000 was missing from the stash and reported the incident. Baloyi and Matlou were arrested the following day.
Albertina Ramoletswi Mphahlele is expected back in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court next week after she was arrested by the Hawks on Saturday. Mphahlele was initially arrested in March 2013 following allegations of her receiving grants for three non-existing grandchildren. She was warned to return to court at a later date but never pitched resulting in a warrant of arrest being issued by the court, says Maluleke.
