Duo arrested for alleged student accommodation scam: one acquitted

The duo were arrested at the University of Limpopo campus, after the Hawks received a tip-off about their alleged corrupt activities.

POLOKWANE – Two suspects arrested yesterday (Wednesday 17 January 2018) in connection with an alleged accommodation scam at the University of Limpopo, appeared before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court today.

The duo were arrested at the University of Limpopo campus, after the Hawks received a tip-off about their alleged corrupt activities, explained Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke in an earlier statement.

One of the accused was acquitted of all charges and the second suspect has been temporarily released and is expected back in court on 21 February 2018, concluded Maluleke.


POLOKWANE – The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Limpopo would like to warn  university students, particularly the first year students, about swindlers who promise students accommodation on campus in return of payment.

This warning comes after two young suspects were arrested on Wednesday in connection with an alleged accommodation scam at the campus, says Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke.

According to reports the pair, who are reportedly students at the University of Limpopo, allegedly conspired and solicited R2 000 payments from incoming first year students with the promise of securing them accommodation. When this promise never materialised, members from the Hawks were tipped-off about the alleged corrupt activities and swiftly apprehended them at the campus, explained Maluleke.

Both suspects (both 21 years of age) are expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on January 18 2018, to face a charge of corruption, he concluded.
