This is how to keep your child’s school shoes in tip-top shape

Review spoke to shoe expert Gerson Mogashoa to find out how to keep your school shoes looking and smelling good for longer.

POLOKWANE – It is back to school and that means taking special care of the school uniforms and shoes. Parents make sure to involve your little ones in this task by teaching them the important job of cleaning and polishing their school shoes.

Review spoke to shoe expert Gerson Mogashoa who works for a shoe repair shop in Polokwane, to find out how to keep your school shoes looking and smelling good for longer. “Something that most parents neglect to teach their children is the importance of cleaning the shoe inners – wash them and allow them to dry thoroughly before inserting them back in the shoes. One must also ensure that from day one of buying the school shoes the correct polish as well as cleaning materials are used. Remember there are brown school shoes and black school shoes…,” he said.

He gave a few tips and advise with regards to looking after school shoes:

  • Keep the shoes shining by using a good quality shoe polish and ensure that the shoes polish matches the shoe colour.
  • Remove any dust and dirt on the shoes such as mud, dust. Once mud has dried it may be difficult to remove and vigorously rubbing the shoes may damage them.
  • “Just a tip when polishing the school shoes one must remember to spread out some newspaper on the floor so that you don’t leave behind any polish stains when cleaning the shoes
  • Be sure to air the shoes every day. When you take off the shoes, place them where they can be exposed to air, such as close to a window. “To the parents remember to always remove shoes from a sport bag as soon as your child gets home
  • If it rains and the shoes do get wet make sure you dry them as soon as possible. “To help with the drying process one can stuff newspapers inside them and letting them dry normally. Afterwards polish them.

“Another tip for the parents please make sure that you mark your child’s school shoes as they all look alike and for this reason may get mixed up and lost at school,” he concluded.
