LIMPOPO – According to provincial Hawks spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke, the two suspects briefly appeared before the Mookgopong Magistrate’s Court today, 3 May, and were remanded in custody until 11 May for formal bail application.
“The accused allegedly stopped a vehicle of our undercover cop and demanded a R200 bribe in order not to issue a ticket for violating Traffic Act,” he concluded.
LIMPOPO – The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has welcomed the arrest, saying that no one is above the law.
The two National Traffic Police (NTP) officers, aged 29 and 30-years-old, were arrested by members of the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s, National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit and the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) on Tuesday, 1 May.

The officers allegedly accepted a R200 bribe from a motorist who made an illegal U-turn on R101 in Mokgopong.
They are expected to appear in the Mokgopong Magistrate’s court on Thursday, 3 May 2018.
The RTMC added that traffic officers are reminded that their duty is to save lives and not to use their uniform as a license to solicit bribes.
Members of the NTP had been deployed in Limpopo to assist in controlling high traffic volumes and ensuring safety on the roads over the long weekend.
“Bribery and corruption is a major concern in traffic law enforcement and undermines efforts aimed at reducing road crashes, injuries and fatalities. The two will also face internal disciplinary charges from the RTMC for bringing the Corporation into disrepute,” a statement read.
