Five suspects arrested during protests in Seleka village near Tom Burke

According to police, the unrest is due to a fight over chieftainship.

LIMPOPO – Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says five suspects were arrested at Ga-Seleka outside Lephalale after three trucks and a bus were torched and used as barricades along the R572 road between Lephalale and Swartwater.

“The destruction and the scattering of peppers across the road made it difficult for motorists to make use of the road. The situation has now been normalised and the local municipality has been engaged to help remove the barricades,” he said.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, has condemned the violent nature of the protest and has urged everyone in the area to respect the rule of law by staging peaceful protest actions.

The arrested suspects will appear in the Phalala Magistrate Courts soon on charges of assault on police and malicious damage to property.

Police investigations continue.

Police are currently monitoring the situation.

Motorists are advised to proceed into the area with caution and those travelling from Botswana, Swartwater and from Steiloop should avoid using the R572 and use the N11 instead.

Motorists travelling from Lephalale can use the R518 and other roads.
