Moringa gin a true taste of Limpopo

The Managing Director for NTL Baraka Eco-Farming and Tourism situated at the Eiland, outside Tzaneen, Nomsa Ngwenya said her new Moringa gin has already won her a South African Women's Wine and Spirit award early this year.

LIMPOPO – Ngwenya said the gin is produced in Politsi and taken to Knysna in the Western Cape to be finalised. Ngwenya said she established her farm in 2012 and have employed more than 30 workers and is well-known as a producer of organic vegetables and herbs, which include the profitable and multi functional Moringa tree which is processed into tea and alcohol.

Some of the products which Ngwenya produce from the Moringa tree include bread, ice tea, pesto, tea bags, seeds and Moringa powder. She said she export some of her products to European Union countries. According to Ngwenya, the farm comprises of four units including production, processing and packaging, training and development.

Born in Nelspruit Mpumalanga, Ngwenya says the demand for her products is high overseas and she explained that they anticipate an export of 15 tons of Moringa every month and that it is going to bring more revenue for the country.

Recently she exhibited many of her Moringa products during a Greater Tzaneen Agri-Expo held at Tzaneen Country Lodge. “I mostly get help from my daughter, Sharmaigne who frequently attends export workshops and exhibit the farm abroad,” Ngwenya said.

Ngwenya said everything became possible because of a partnership with her daughter, Sharmaigne, who holds a BSc degree in microbiology from University of Limpopo.
