Did you know Africa has the largest diversity of birds? Michael Mills tells more

Traveling bird watcher, Michael Mills shared his knowledge about birds in Africa during the recent monthly meeting at the Polokwane Bird Club.

POLOKWANE – Growing up in national parks around the country as his father was a biologist, Michael says he was always into birds. “Even though I don’t really have a favourite bird, the Swierstra’s Franklin has a soft spot in my heart. I was the first birdwatcher to see him,” he explains.

A triple threat, Michael not only guides tours for bird watchers but he is also involved in conservation works and he’s an author.

During his visit to the Bird Club he spoke about unique birds of Africa as well as the top countries in Africa for bird watchers.

According to Michael, there are a few key facts that makes Africa special, namely the fact that there are 2 792 bird species recorded and it has the highest bird family diversity of any region. He adds that 70% of species on the continent are endemic, meaning the animals only exist in one geographic region.
