Police arrest 890 suspects during joint operation

A total of 890 suspects, aged between 22 and 51 years, were arrested during a joint Police operation conducted across the province on the weekend.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe said operations were up and running in all clusters until early Monday morning. Officers who joined the operation conducted roadblocks, stop and search operations, patrols of city centres, villages and farms and traced wanted suspects in hotspots across the province.
He pointed out that the operation saw 158 vehicles being searched, 38 vehicles tested, 586 persons searched and 18 road traffic fines being issued in the Dennilton area.
In Thohoyandou cluster the operation, led by Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba, resulted in the arrest of 40 people for public drinking, 16 for contravening of the Road Traffic Act, 19 for contravention of the Migration Act, five for driving under the influence of alcohol, seven for failing to comply with the conditions attached to liquor licences.
Arrests made elsewhere in the province included suspects wanted for murder, attempted murder, rape, armed robbery, burglary, business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property and drugs.
Police recovered 12 stolen vehicles, 14 firearms and 21 rounds of live ammunition, six television sets, six cell phones, four laptops, 156 sachets of Cat, nyaope, cocaine and crystal meths, a variety of electrical appliances, clothing, music equipment and systems, electric cables, grinders, airtime vouchers and knives. The estimated value of the items including the vehicles is R3 million.
He added that some of the suspects have already appeared before various courts across the province while the others are expected to appear soon.
Ledwaba has applauded officers and other role players who worked tirelessly during the operation to apprehend the suspects.
