Love triangle leads to the death of three people in Ribacross

Police say the motive behind the incident is unknown but domestic violence cannot be ruled out.

LIMPOPO – Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, has condemned continuous acts of domestic related attacks and killings, still prevalent in some parts of the province.

This condemnation emanates from an incident that occurred in the early hours of this morning in the Tubatse policing area, outside Burgersfort.

Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says three people died in what is believed to be a love triangle at about 01:00 this morning, 23 February. The incident occurred in rented rooms in Ribacross village.

“A middle aged man poured an inflammable substance in the room of a 35-year-old man and set it alight. The victim was rescued by other tenants and took him to hospital, but he died soon after he was admitted,” he said.

The suspect proceeded to his alleged girlfriend’s room, broke the window, jumped inside, removed a two-year-old baby girl and set the room alight. Both the suspect and the girlfriend were burnt to death.

“The child is still in hospital for medical treatment and cases of arson, two counts of murder and an inquest docket were opened for further police investigations to take place,” Ngoepe said.

The motive behind this incident is not clear at this stage, but, domestic violence may not be ruled out.

“Communities are advised and encouraged to seek professional assistance from local authorities for intervention in case of any domestic related problems, rather than resorting to violence,” concluded General Scheepers.
