Police warn against falsely reporting crimes following the arrest of a 35-year-old man

The man reported to police that he was robbed at gunpoint but investigations show that he had shared the money with the so-called "suspects"

POLOKWANE – Police in Limpopo have strongly condemned those who continue to report false information with the aim of covering their unlawful ‘tracks’.

Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says this warning comes after an incident which occurred along the R519 Bergenek road, in the Westenburg Policing area, outside Polokwane.

“A 35-year-old man, reported to the police that he was robbed of cash and a cellphone at a gun-point, while driving a company vehicle along the R519. The suspect claimed that unknown suspects traveling in a Toyota Corolla, pulled him off the road at gun-point and demanded money. He said in a statement that he then stopped his vehicle and the suspect managed to get away with his cellphone and an undisclosed amount of money,” Ngoepe explained.

The matter was reported to the police, who through thorough investigations, found that the very same complainant, had shared the so-called “robbed” money with his accomplices and was arrested.

A manhunt for the other suspects is still underway.

“Members of the community must not undermine the intelligence of the Police by reporting false cases, which results in the misuse of scarce police resources and time, that is meant to be deployed where they are mostly needed. Those who are still trying to engage in these deceitful acts, will be dealt with harshly and without compromise,” he concluded.

The arrested suspect will appear before the Polokwane Magistrates Court, soon, on a charge of perjury.
