Burgersfort Police stop ‘opportunistic locals’ looting burning stores

A grocery and a furniture store, were completely gutted during the incident which occurred on Monday, 8 April.

LIMPOPO – The police in Burgersfort have opened an enquiry into an incident where two stores, a grocery shop called Save More Supermarket and a furniture store called Sharp Sharp Fashion Centre, were completely gutted.

In a statement, Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, says the police were alerted about the fire and arrived on the scene to find ‘opportunistic locals’ attempting to help themselves with whatever groceries were left in one of the burning shops.

“The officials from the local fire brigade were also called but by the time they arrived, the fire had already caused extensive damage. The situation was immediately brought under control to allow the owners to assess the damage.”

The Saps Provincial Head of Corporate Communication and Liaison Services Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo accompanied by the Saps Burgersfort Cluster Commander Brigadier Ria Mkhabela, the Station Commander of Burgersfort Brigadier Risimati Maluleke and the Burgersfort Detective Section Commander Colonel Elias Zwane today visited the scene as part of the intervention in the ongoing Police investigations.

He added that the cause of the fire is not known at this stage and urges anyone with information about this incident, to contact Colonel Elias Zwane on 082 449 0273. Alternatively they can contact the 24-hour crime stop number on 0860010111, the crime Line SMS 32211 or the nearest Police Station.

Police investigations are still continuing, Ngoepe concluded.
