The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) recognised and celebrated educators from various schools in the province by presenting them with awards for their dedication and service in the profession during the organisation’s 2019 long service awards event at Pietersburg English Medium Primary School (Pemps) recently.
The thirty educators who were rewarded have been teaching for periods of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years. Naptosa President Ntantala Nkosiphendule indicated that this was a nationwide programme hosted by the organisation to recognise the role played by educators in improving the lives of children. He stated that the ceremonies serve as farewell functions to those who are retiring from the teaching profession and also to motivate educators who are still in the system to go an extra mile.
When asked about the current education system, Nkosiphendule said the organisation was not content with the standard of education and that there were many shortcomings that had to be dealt with by the Department of Education such as overcrowding, poor schools infrastructure and provision of learner-teacher support material among others. He went on to stress that schools have now turned into war zones and added that education stakeholders must find solutions to the turmoil.
“Our educators are doing their best to teach with limited resources in dilapidated schools but I think things can improve drastically if the department listens and act on some of the issues we raise. The organisation has the best interest of children at heart that is why we award educators to keep them motivated,” Nkosiphedule explained. He congratulated the recipients and encouraged them to continue shaping youngsters into future leaders.
