POLOKWANE – Women within the tourism sector gathered at Hayani Guest Lodge on 29 May. Limpopo Tourism hosted a seminar that saw women in tourism, from all over the province, gather to better themselves and their businesses.

Kate Mogale, the Deputy Director of Tourism Transformation for Ledet explained that women need to put action to their words because for a long time empowerment has been talked about, but not backed up with action.

“We need to shift from having talks about empowerment. We already have information about women being empowered, we know that women must be empowered but what action are we taking to empower them? We need to move from a state of encouraging each other to supporting each others’ businesses. Last year we did the mobilisation, we can’t be mobilising again this year,” she said before adding that platforms such as the seminar are a good opportunity for women to support each other through action.

Women in Tourism Provincial Chairperson for Limpopo, Grace Sibara took the time to encourage the women to use the seminar as an opportunity to learn and network with their fellow businesswomen.

Eliza Mtsweni, Romilla Mhaule and Sister Magagula were also in attendance.

She urged women to create opportunities for themselves and to do introspection as to whether they are happy with the representation of women in leadership positions in the workplace or not.

“Whether we are satisfied with the skills development and opportunities afforded to women depends on us. Within tourism, we tend to say tourism is everything and everything is tourism. Some of the objectives of Women in Tourism is to create a platform to network and expand our businesses and access information and business resources and to address our challenges as a collective. You are at the right place, at the right time. Feel comfortable and be relaxed because you are going to learn more,” she said.
