866 suspects arrested by Limpopo police during operation New Dawn

During the operation, 1 001 traffic fines were issued, eight shebeens closed, five cars confiscated, ammunition and weapons, as well as drugs weighing over 230g.

LIMPOPO –  In a concerted effort to deal head on with all categories of crime throughout the province, Limpopo police have arrested 866 suspects between the ages of 19 and 51-years-old for various offences. The arrests were effected during the operation “New Dawn”, conducted from 17 June until this morning, 25 June 2019, in all clusters of the province.

Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe reports that the operation was made up of various police units from provincial, cluster and station levels and was aimed at stabilizing and normalizing crime infested areas, through roadblocks, stop and searches, tracing of wanted suspects and raiding of unlicensed businesses, including liquor outlets.

“The suspects were arrested for crimes raging from murder, attempted murder, business and house robbery, armed robbery, burglary (residential and business), rape, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of drugs and suspected stolen properties, contravention of Immigration Act, driving under the influence of alcohol and operating unlicensed liqour outlets,” Ngoepe said.

During the operation, 1 001 traffic fines were issued, eight shebeens closed, five cars confiscated, ammunition and weapons, as well as drugs weighing over 230g.

“The origin of the recovered firearms and other items, will still be determined through the ongoing police investigations and the suspects arrested during this operation will appear before various Magistrate Courts, around the province, soon,” he added.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, has commended Saps members who participated in these operations for their excellent job.
