As a way of ensuring that learners participate in various sporting codes under the guidance of well-trained school coaches, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has in this financial year set aside a budget amounting to R1,3 million to train 950 educators to make it possible for local aspiring athletes to compete on both national and international stages.
This was revealed by MEC Thandi Moraka during her department’s budget vote speech at the Provincial Legislature last Thursday. She indicated that there was a need for her office to collaborate with the Department of Education with the intention of outlining and understanding the roles and responsibilities of the two departments. She further stated that efforts are already at an advance stage to finalise and sign off a memorandum of understanding between the two departments for the school sport programme to be implemented in all the public schools.
Moraka went on to highlight that Limpopo Sport Confederation was also an enabling agency in delivering sport programmes where government is unable to reach. The confederation assists in ensuring that sport federations function effectively and efficiently, she explained and reiterated that the confederation will be supported with an allocation of R1,8 million to render sport services to communities alongside federations.
“Limpopo will still be hosting the National Indigenous Games in 2019/20 for the fifth year in a row at the Seshego Stadium. A total number of 28 indigenous clubs from all local and district municipalities will be supported and sustained to build teams that will play at the provincial and national level and an amount of R1,4 million has been set aside to support these clubs,” Moraka concluded.
