Delivering the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure’s budget vote at the Provincial Legislature last Thursday, MEC Monicca Mochadi outlined plans to refurbish dilapidated public property, complete existing projects and also start new ones in the 2019/20 financial year.
She said for the Education portfolio, her department currently has 59 school projects at an advanced planning stage and construction is to commence during the third quarter of this financial year. The department is also managing delivery of two emergency medical service projects in Lebowakgomo and Bosele and two laundry upgrade projects at Pietersburg and St. Ritas hospitals at a cost of R112 million. Mochadi further revealed that her office would implement seven traditional office projects to the tune of R62,2 million in the current financial year.
“We are constructing the Limpopo Traffic College in Dzanani in phases over the medium term expenditure framework. Phase 1 is the construction of an accommodation block with a budget of R20 million while phase 2 is the construction of a second accommodation block at a cost of R23 million. Construction is expected to commence in October. The people of Thohoyandou will soon receive a brand-new driving license testing centre which to the value of R15 million. The project is in the planning stage and construction expected to commence in December,” Mochadi stated.
She reminded the house that her department had been allocated R3,6 billion to deliver on its mandate which is to provide and manage sustainable social and economic infrastructure and in the implementation of the expanded public works programme.
An allocation of R1,4 billion is transferred to Roads Agency Limpopo, an entity of the department tasked with the responsibility of providing much needed roads infrastructure, the MEC concluded.
