Illegal miner arrested, excavator worth R1.5 million seized

The 38-year-old man was caught red-handed illegally mining chrome at a mine in the Burgersfort area.

LIMPOPO – Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says the illegal miner was arrested during a concerted operation which comprised members of the Provincial Organized Crime Unit, the Burgersfort Cluster Public Order Police Unit and  local mine security guards.

Ngoepe explained that the joint operation was up and running at Balotjaneng village outside Burgersfort central business district (CBD) when they followed up on information which led them to the spot where made the arrest.

During the arrest, the police confiscated an excavator estimated to the value of R1. 5 million. He will appear in the Praktiseer Magistrate Court soon.

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba commended the teams who are continue to clean-up the illegal activities in the mining industry, concluded General Ledwaba.
