POLOKWANE – Joseph Mapfumo says he was tired of waiting for someone else to create employment for him, so he created employment for himself.
The artist says he has been unemployment since 2010 and the following year, decided he was no longer going to wait to get a job. Joseph says he has been painting since he was just a child after learning the skill from his uncle. He says it takes him roughly three hours to start and perfect one painting.

“It does not take too long, I can finish about five paintings in a day.” He says he imagines the paintings he would like, then visualises them and transfers them onto canvas.
“Many of the things I paint are places I would like to go one day.”
Joseph says he does not have a set location where you can find him as he roams freely around the CBD area. “I do not have an office, I walk around trying to get customers.”
Joseph sells his paintings at R350 a piece and says he can paint whatever the client wants. If you would like to purchase one of his paintings, you can contact Joseph at 062 606 3236.
