Tips of how to avoid a ‘mini’ fiasco
Pearl Mabasa, fashion stylist, explained that there are many ways to dress a miniskirt up or down, which makes it appealing to most body types.
POLOKWANE – Minis made a debut in the 1960’s and since then, mini skirts, dresses and shorts have become a timeless feature in the fashion stakes.
To dress down, Pearl advised wearing denim because it is relaxed and laid back. “If you do not want a plain denim skirt, find one that is accessorised with buttons, lace or patch work, although I would advise caution with patchwork because it can look tacky,” she said. Another item which is currently big, is the two-piece set. Pearl explained that the skirt and top are matched and for those with the body for it, they can wear a crop top together with a mini.
Floral miniskirts are feminine and flirty and a perfect day look for spring and summer. “You can mix and match various floral items and still like good,” she said. If you want to play it safe, go with a printed skirt and a solid colour on top, or a solid coloured bottom with a floral top. Leather minis can also be worn in the summer, but pair them with a spaghetti strap top and other light materials.
For an evening look, you can never go wrong with something short in black. Pleats on your short skirt, dress or shorts make a formal look. You can pair the pleats with a form fitting top that you can tuck in. “Skinny people can get away with oversized tops,” she said. Leather shorts and miniskirts work prefect for the night when accessorised right. Metallic and sequins work perfect for an evening look for shorts and skirts. The shininess creates a sparkle.
Shoes can make or break an outfit. One major mistake that women make is combining a short skirt with shoes that remove the class from the outfit. One rule to keep you on track with the length of skirt and heels is, ‘”the longer the skirt, the higher your heels can be,” anything other than this can end up looking lascivious. Pearl shared tips on how to use shoes to make a look go from day to night.
Casual:
Wear your mini with sneakers. A nice pair of sneakers makes a look casual and relaxed but also trendy. Wedges and sandals also create a relaxed look for the casual occasions. “The general rule is that flat shoes, with the exception of wedges, create a more relaxed look.”

Formal:
Pair your mini with high heel boots, pumps or sandals to show off your legs. A high heel elongates your legs and gives them a nice shape which works well for minis. For events at night, in chilly weather, you can add stockings and high heels to keep you warm but still on trend.
