Polokwane’s ‘Gift’ to Idols SA finale
He might not have been one of this season's Idols SA contestants, but Gift Selaelo Morukhuladi set the Idols stage alight.
POLOKWANE – The 25-year-old Gift Selaelo Morukhuladi, who hails from Westenburg in Polokwane, is known as Muzzle Per’Perdo and has done well for himself lately.
He has recorded various songs with famous names such as DJ Zinhle and Lucille Slade. Muzzle, DJ Zinhle and Rethabile performed their song, Umlilo, on Idols SA at the Idols SA finale on Sunday, 17 November where the winner for season 15 was announced as Luyolo Yiba.
“Before I was known as Muzzle, my stage name was DGAF because I could not care less of what people said about my music. As time went on, all of my friends who heard my songs told me that my songs are ‘silencers’ and that no other producer can bring them down,” he said.
He told Review that his best friend once said he is a dog-muzzle because his music silences other artists. “I then said; I am basically muzzling other producers? And this is where the name derived from,” he added.
Muzzle started performing at local restaurants and clubs in 2010 and ended up travelling to Johannesburg to pursue his career as a musician. “I get my music talent from my father who used to be the band master of the South African Army Band. This inspired me to be in the music industry. Being able to put musical instruments together in harmony to make music inspired me to do more than just compose. I can today proudly say I produce for big names,” he added.
He has performed at big events such as the Mapungubwe Jazz Festival, Motsepe Foundation, The First Friday Celebration, Major League Gardens, Knock Knock Spring Festival and the Drag Festival. “I believe that there are artists and producers out there who make good music but are afraid to go further in the music industry, because not everyone is given a chance to showcase their talents. They fear that time will be wasted and age waits for no man,” he advised.
He added that anyone who would like to be an artist and make it big one day, should never give up on their dreams no matter how hard or complicated their situation may seem. “One thing we should always keep in mind is that nothing stays the same forever. Your failures today will lead you to your success tomorrow,” he added.
Muzzle is currently producing more songs with DJ Zinhle and other artists in Johannesburg and says he will be back in his hometown to mentor local artists.
