While the world commemorates 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, Limpopo made headlines after the brutal murder of a young female college student at the Capricorn Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Tvet) College’s Ramokgopha Campus at Botlokwa on Sunday.
Provincial Police Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo refuted media reports that Precious Ramabulana (21) was stabbed more than 50 times. “We did not provide any such information. The total number of stab wounds and the location of the wounds on the body are evidence to be given in court,” Mojapelo said.
He said the incident happened at about 02:30 on Sunday. The deceased was allegedly asleep when a suspect gained access through the window of her rented room at Ga-Joel Section in Mokomene. The suspect seemingly attacked and stabbed her several times before fleeing the scene, he said.
Ramabulana’s frantic screams were heard by the neighbour who alerted the Police. On arrival her body, displaying several stab wounds, was found in a pool of blood. The motive for the attack is still unknown, Mojapelo indicated.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has instructed that the killer must be hunted down and brought to book soonest.
Transport and Community Safety MEC Dickson Masemola sent heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and students of Capricorn Tvet College.
A statement by his spokesperson, Joel Seabi indicated that the MEC found the incident to be gruesome and callous, especially as Government launched the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence this week.
Masemola was expected to visit Mokomene as well as the campus yesterday (Wednesday).
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo is also saddened by the senseless killing of the student.
DA Political Head for Molemole, Risham Maharaj said the deceased was a DA Student Organisation member studying towards an N6 qualification in Business Management and preparing for her last exam.
“The murder took place as we enter 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence and the senseless killing continues to highlight the vulnerability and plight of women and girls in our rural communities and it is clear that our government is failing to keep them safe,” Maharaj said
In a statement by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Provincial Chairperson Jossey Buthane he also emphasised the brutality of the incident amid the 16 Days campaign.
