The water shedding intervention implemented by Polokwane Municipality last week has already provided some relief in city areas where water is now more readily available, however, the eminent incorporation of rural areas into the plan will hopefully improve the situation even further.
Communications and Marketing Manager of the municipality, Matshidiso Mothapo said water shedding could only be implemented successfully twice last week during times when Eskom did not implement load shedding. “The reservoirs cannot rehabilitate when the pumps are affected by load shedding,” he explained.
Mothapo said the municipality was currently engaging with traditional leaders and ward councillors in the rural areas of supply regarding the implementation of water shedding and that an announcement would be made as soon as the process has been finalised. “This will ensure that more water reaches the city reservoirs,” Mothapo explained.
On Tuesday the level of the Potgieter Avenue reservoir was at 0%, while the reservoirs on Krugersburg next to Ster Park were at 24%, 13% and 19% respectively. The Seshego reservoir was at 23% while the water flow from Olifantspoort water treatment works and Ebenezer Dam were 177 l/sec and 306 l/sec respectively.
According to the website of the Department of Water and Sanitation, the levels of the Doorndraai and Ebenezer dams were at 12,9% and 25,1% respectively on Monday, while the levels of the Dap Naudé, Magoebaskloof and Flag Boshielo dams were at 98,1%, 100,7% and 102,7%.
