2 illegal chrome ‘miners’ to appear in court today

The arrests were made thanks to an operation by members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit

LIMPOPO – Two illegal miners were arrested on Monday, 16 March and are set to appear in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court today, 17 March.

The arrests were made thanks to an operation conducted in the Malipsdrift policing area by members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit of the South African Police Service in Limpopo.

According to Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo’s statement, the miners (both aged 29) were spotted when they transported  unprocessed chrome along the R37 road between Burgersfort and Lebowakgomo at around 00:05 on Monday morning.

“The illegal miners were arrested and their truck together with the chrome were then confiscated,” the statement reads.

Mojapelo added that both suspects have been positively linked with illegal mining activities in the Atok area and that it is not clear at this stage where the chrome was destined to.

Police investigations are still continuing.
