K9 academy ‘zooms’ in on training essentials

Don’t fret over the lockdown as the K9 academy will host seminars online this Saturday and Sunday.

POLOKWANE – The owner of K9 Training Academy, Jenny Venter is excited about the academy’s latest venture.

Borne from the need to stay connected with clients and not lose any dog training time, Jenny decided to host an online seminar which turned out to be a major success.

The seminars will now be hosted as follows: three hours on Saturday and three hours on Sunday, and topics that are discussed include responsible pet ownership, abuse, health vaccinations, grooming as well as ear and dental care.

“A dog is quite sensitive towards your tone of voice and body language and along with that comes the topic of lures versus rewards versus bribes. This will also be discussed.”

Jenny explains that many people do not understand why their dogs need training.

“We will discuss basic commands such as the stay and wait command. All dogs need treats, toys and rewards and the value of these will also be discussed.”

Some people might find their dogs are naughty, but this might not be true. Learning about their learnt behaviour and behavioural problems will help you find the problem with your ‘naughty’ dog, is her advice.

“We will discuss your dog’s body language, your dog with children and mental and physical stimulation.”

Other topics include care for my dog, choosing the right dog for my family, dog aggression, socialisation, leash skills, engagement and how to stop a dog fight.

Feedback from the first seminar:

Simon and Jacky.Simon Mathebula was quite impressed. “The seminar was great and I learned a lot. I encourage my other classmates to attend seminars such as this. There are lots of information in the seminar and here we get enough time to ask a question and comment, to learn about our dog ‘s behaviour. I now know when it is the right time to get a puppy.”

Amelia and Zeus

Amelia Quin advised everyone who considers to participate to do so.

“It is really worth it. I learned so much about my dogs and what I did right or wrong as a handler as well as so much more.”

Hunette and Czar

Hunette Taylor says it was a very informative seminar and a great refresher course.

“I think all dog handlers should attend a seminar like this. It helps to understand the dog better as well as the type of training.”

Liza and Mia

Liza van Jaarsveld said she learned much more on how to help her furry children and cannot wait to do in-depth training.

Readers who are interested to join the Zoom session on Saturday morning at 10:00 and again on Sunday at 10:00 are welcome to send a WhatsApp message to Jenny at 081 801 6271. The costs are R100 for both days.

Banking details will be sent after you confirm your spot via WhatsApp.

There will be coffee and bathroom breaks in between.

You will need to install Zoom on your phone or computer. Jenny will send you the link invite and password on the morning of the seminar. Also, have a pen and a notepad ready.

There will be a question and answer session at the end of the seminars.
