Be a blood hero, even during lockdown
Blood donors can during the lockdown make an appointment to donate blood, so as to avoid overcrowding at the donor centres.
Some things in life cannot wait for the national lockdown to be lifted. Babies are born daily, cancer patients need treatment and there are other cases where patients or people need blood transfusions. Therefore, it is important for people to still donate blood during lockdown.
Bethuel Mokonyane, South African National Blood Service (SANBS) Limpopo Collection Manager, encourages residents to spare a few minutes to donate blood and in the doing so, save a life.
“We still have mobile clinics and all our donor centres are open from Monday to Saturday,” he told Review.
Mokonyane explained that, as per government precautionary measures, everyone should wear a mask and avoid crowded places. “With this in mind, donors who wish to donate at their nearest centre, are encouraged to call the centre and make an appointment so we can avoid overcrowding. After setting an appointment, the donor will receive an SMS confirming his or her appointment. The SMS has a time slot for each appointment made.”
If you get pulled over by law enforcement authorities, show them the SMS. If the tele-recruiting staff call the donor, they will arrange with the donor a time.
Operating hours are Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 and Saturdays from 09:00 to 14:00 until further notice.
