R50 000 donation to Rivoni School For the Blind to be used for renovations
Learners are being taught in temporary classrooms, many of which leak when it rains.
LIMPOPO – In an effort to improve education in the community, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in South Africa donated R50 000 to the Rivoni Society For the Blind recently. The money will be used to renovate some of the dilapidated buildings at the Rivoni School For the Blind.
Most of the buildings at the school are in a dilapidated state and in need of renovations. Learners are being taught in temporary classrooms, many of which leak when it rains. The Premier, Stan Mathabatha visited the school in January and promised to have a contractor on-site by April. The former Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Michael Masutha, intervened at the Rivoni School for the Blind when he visited them in 2018 and promised to improve the facilities.

In spite of the lack of proper facilities, the Rivoni School for the Blind has delivered above-average matric results in the past few years. During the handover, Rev Giyani Moyane said he hoped the money will be used to benefit the learners and the community. “We regard learners as assets and they should benefit from this donation. They need our support to be able to realise their educational potential.”
Moyane said the contribution formed part of the church’s social investment programme, focusing on education and community development. The Public Relations Officer of Rivoni Society For the Blind, Emmanuel Mdoka welcomed the donation and said it came at a time when the institution was in dire need.
