[WATCH] Away with all things colonial, Sanco youths demand

SANCO Youth Congress will also run a petition online.

POLOKWANE – The SANCO Youth Congress in the province gathered at the Polokwane City Square earlier today, to hand over two memorandums to the Polokwane Municipality and SAPS respectively.

The first memorandum, handed over to the municipality, calls for the removal of all colonial and apartheid statues as well as the renaming of institutions, monuments and streets around the city and the rural areas.

Provincial Convener of Sanco Youth Congress, Raymond Makhura said the organisation proposes that these monuments, streets and institutions be renamed to veteran fighters or people who are part of South African history without infringing, suppressing or promoting racism.

The organisations argues that it is not correct to still have apartheid statues and monuments in a post democratic era.

Sanco Limpopo also handed over a memorandum to the provincial police to ask them to join hands with them in the fight against gender-based violence and to launch community police forums in all wards.

Furthermore, they asked authorities to train women and equip them so that they can protect themselves.

A petition against the removal of statues will be launched online later tonight.
