Domestic violence: Cop injured in scuffle
A police station commander was stabbed while attending to a complaint of domestic violence.
LIMPOPO – A 51-year-old man was arrested on a charge of attempted murder following an incident in which a police captain was stabbed.
The captain, who is the station commander at the Elandskraal Police Station, was attending to an incident of gender-based violence in Mbuzini village on Saturday morning, when the stabbing happened.
Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo says the police were alerted to a situation where a woman was assaulted by her partner and the captain together with a colleague attended to the complaint.
“On arrival at around 11:20, the female victim indicated she wanted to move from the house. The officers were assisting her when the accused reportedly stabbed the captain and ran off. The captain was seriously injured and was immediately admitted to hospital. He is in a stable condition,” said Mojapelo.
A search operation that included a police helicopter led to the accused being arrested later the same day at a house in the village where he was hiding.
The suspect faces, among others, charges of attempted murder and will appear in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, Monday 29 June.
The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers condemned the attack of a police officer who is fufilling his role of protecting the vulnerable in the province.
“We cannot allow a situation where police members are attacked, when they are trying to protect the most vulnerable members of the society.”
He commended the police for the swift arrest of the perpetrator and thanked the public for providing information that led to his arrest.
