Limpopo judge sentences four more cigarette smugglers

The police arrested the men after they received a tip-off about their illegal activities

LIMPOPO – Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has hailed the hefty sentences recently handed to four men who were found guilty for smuggling and possession of illicit cigarettes.

The men, aged between 34 and 39, were apprehended last month at a house in Senwabarwana after police were tipped-off about their illegal activities.

In a statement, Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe said the police received a tip off from residents regarding illicit cigarettes being kept in vehicles parked at a house in the area.

“On arrival the police found two vehicles loaded with illicit cigarettes of different assortments. The men were arrested and cigarettes worth an estimated value of R180 000 were confiscated,” Ngoepe added.

The accused recently appeared in the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court on chargers related to smuggling and possession of the illicit cigarettes and Contravention of the Immigration Act and were sentenced as follows:

Chaipa Edson (35), was sentenced to six months imprisonment or the option of a R3 000 fine for the Contravention of Immigration Act.

Victor Mangiradzi (34), was sentenced to three years imprisonment or a R10 000 fine for possession and dealing with illicit cigarettes with an added six months imprisonment for the Contravention of the Immigration Act,

Enerst Meregedzi (39), was sentenced to six months imprisonment or a R3 000 fine for the Contravention of the Immigration Act, and

Nelson Kapfura (34), was sentenced to three years imprisonment or a R10 000 fine with an added six months imprisonment or a fine of R3 000 for the Contravention of the Immigration Act.
