Update: R101 now open following fiery accident

The incident took place on the R101 outside Mokopane earlier today.

According to Mike Maringa, Media Liaison Officer for the Department of Transport and Community Safety, five people have been taken to hospital.

MOKOPANE – Both lanes of the R101 have been temporarily closed due to a collision earlier that involved two cars.

The incident took place around three kilometres outside Mokopane on the way to Polokwane.

Life 24 Ambulance Services Waterberg Region Manager, Tommy van Zyl told Bosveld that three people have been rushed to the Voortrekker Hospital in Mokopane as a result.

Earlier, Transport and Community Safety Spokesperson, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala said in a statement that road users should take note of a raging veld fire on the R101.

“The fire is next to the Percy Fyfe and Zebediela turn-off in the Waterberg District. Motorists are advised to approach with caution or use alternatives routes if possible,” Moremi-Taueatsoala said.

The fire is currently being extinguished by members of Afriforum Mokopane’s neighbourhood watch as well as other community members.
